POLOKWANE – IT is the responsibility of all communities to build sports facilities and raise awareness about the benefit of sport so that young people would participate in sports activities.

These were the words of sport, arts and culture general manager, Veronica Chosane, when she spoke at a basketball day at Mall of the North in Polokwane last Saturday.

Chosane said young people’s sports talents should be developed so that they could have the best possible opportunities to learn and grow.

The basketball day was hosted by the department of sport, arts and culture in cooperation with Limpopo Youth Development, an initiative of the office of the premier.

The day’s activities were open to all residents of Limpopo who had an interest in basketball or who wanted to learn to play the game.

“Basketball is not very popular in Limpopo and we hope to promote the game with this event. It is obvious that people enjoy the game once they get to know it and get into the swing of things,” said Chosane.

“It is also the ideal opportunity to teach people the benefits of healthy lifestyles.”

One of the players at the event, Madumetja Komapo from the Limpopo Pride basketball team, said he started playing basketball two years ago and loved every minute of it. He said Saturday’s basketball day was the first major awareness campaign for this game in Limpopo that he was aware of.

“It is great to be around people who love the game and support our team. Now I can give back by teaching young people how to play basketball,” he said. All teams and individuals who participated in the day received a basic basketball kit each.
