MALAMULELE – WHEN the crème de la crème of junior provincial basketball gather at the Malamulele indoor sports complex this weekend for the u/18 selections, the man who deserve a standing ovation will be 17-year-old David Moloto.

The esteemed shooting guard will be in Giyani with his peers as the game’s provincial governing structure, Limpopo Basketball Association will be selecting the men and women’s junior teams ahead of the Inter-provincial Tournament to be staged in July – either in Cape Town or Gauteng.

The 1,75m tall Seshego Sonics skipper is the man-about-town following his career achievement after he was named the Most Valuable Player during the recent Mamelodi Easter Basketball Tournament in Pretoria.

Lauded by his club coach, Simon Madia Khoza, as the best shooting guard he has ever seen, the young lad who goes by the nickname of ‘Bob the Goat’ started his basketball career at a very tender age and today he has achieved more than most seniors in the game.

“This boy is a genius and he knows that himself. He orchestrates his moves with full flourish and knows how to torment the opposition. His breathtaking dead-eye fielding is a force in the game by itself,” Khoza says.

Moloto’s nickname, the ‘Goat’ means Greatest Of All Times, and indeed, he is the archetypical modern player.

One of his career highlights was when he was selected in the junior national team in 2010 when he was in gr. 7 to represent South Africa in Istanbul, Turkey.

Moloto, the younger brother of Rebecca Moloto, who was one of the vital cogs in the Sonics winning schema, has a basketball profile that reads like a well-penned narrative that thrills the curious reader.

His bulging silverware cabinet bears testimony to the acclaimed All Stars player in the Capricorn district who has scooped uncountable awards.

Moloto sums up his achievement in a nutshell that: “All these trophies, medals and accolades are the results of passion, perseverance and panache. But most importantly, I was fortunate to be introduced to the game by some of the greatest minds in the game. The Khoza brothers (Gazani and Simon) have imparted their skill on me and my peers in an amazing way. With the knowledge they have passed on me, I am confident of wearing the senior national jersey.”
