POLOKWANE – BENNY’s Sports Academy in Vhembe region was crowned the winner of the Limpopo leg of the Danone Nations Cup that was played at Noorderland High School on Saturday.
The Danone Nations Cup is an u/12 soccer tournament staged in 32 countries, involving thousands of players in its preliminary stages, and culminating each year in a world final at which the winning team from each of the countries competes.
According to Franck Riboud, chief executive officer of Danone, the Danone Nations Cup is run with clear values in mind. “Sport is closely associated with high moral values making it an exceptional educational tool and an unrivalled opportunity for personal development, social integration and human advancement. The key values of the Danone Nations Cup are perfectly in line with Danone’s values: proximity, openness, playing for the pleasure of the game and fair play,” Riboud said.
He said the tournament was now in its 15th year and had grown from having eight participating countries to having 32.
South African School Football Association (SASFA) president, Patrick Mabasa said all the schools that participated were winners; the fact that only one school proceeded to the next round did not mean that others had not performed well. “We are glad that Danone is here for the development of our children. We are happy that this province is home to the team that is going to represent us in the national championship at the end of June in Benoni,” Mabasa said.
Mbishi Mokwena, head coach of Benny’s Sports Academy, said the team played very well.
“I am proud of my boys and they have made the school proud. We have managed to achieve these results because of hard work and extensive training. I would like to thank our senior coach, Justice Matloga, and the school management for giving me the opportunity to coach the u/12 team. I believe that I have made them proud,” Mokwena said.
