Polokwane bodybuilder Mapula Colin crowned IFBB national champion

Polokwane bodybuilder Mapula Colin wins the IFBB SA Championship and will represent South Africa at the World Championships in Barcelona.

POLOKWANE – Local bodybuilder Mapula Colin, who has over 24 years of active gym training, was recently crowned champion at the IFBB South African Championships in the 40+ uncategorised category, held from September 11–13 at Junction Kloof in KwaZulu-Natal.

Bodybuilder Mapula Colin from Polokwane is the current champion for the 40+ uncategorised at the IFBB SA Championships.

Colin, a former beauty queen and road runner, told Polokwane Observer that her journey into bodybuilding was a long-held dream.

“I yearned to elevate my fitness and challenge myself to see just what I can accomplish,” she said.

Her husband, also her assistant coach and mentor, initially had concerns about the physical and household impact of her pursuit, but fully supported her once she committed.

She revealed that she had been selected to train as a weightlifter before transitioning to bodybuilding, which required structured coaching and a rigorous training programme.

Bodybuilder Mapula Colin from Polokwane wins champion title (1st place) at the IFBB SA Championships in KZN among other 2nd and 3rd place winners.

Her first competition in April last year marked the beginning of her competitive journey, and she set her sights on winning from the start.

Colin’s dedication earned her a spot on the SA Protea team, representing South Africa at the IFBB World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in December.

Ending seventh in the ladies wellness category, she described the experience as transformative.

“Being on stage with the best in the world made me feel I belong. All the hard work and preparation culminated in those few minutes on stage,” she said.

Her recent championship win in KZN officially awarded her Protea colours, a green blazer and capping ceremony, further solidifying her status.

Colin is now set to represent South Africa again at the IFBB World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, from November 13-18.

Her advice to aspiring bodybuilders: “Have a clear goal. Live by the 3-D’s – diligence, discipline and determination. Be willing to accept criticism, good or bad, and stay committed to your vision.”

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
