IT WAS a home ground advantage that was well used by the Rev MP Malatjie Primary School that saw them crowned Limpopo champions of the Danone Nations Cup at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday.
Rev MP Malatjie edged Chuchekani Primary School out with a final score of 5-4 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after regulation time.
The Seshego Zone 8-based school needed their penalty shootout victories against Chuchekani Primary School and Bonwankwe Primary School with a 9-8 and 3-2 score line respectively to eventually become the Limpopo champions who would represent the province in the Danone Cup national finals.
From those results Rev MP Malatjie, the Capricorn district representative in the Danone tournament, gained momentum and beat Mashamba Primary School with one goal before mauling Kgwatlhele Primary School 3-0.
The head coach of Rev MP Malatjie, Ronnie Sekgobela, said their victory was the result of the hard work that his boys put in during their preparation for the tournament.
He said his focus was to correct the mistakes which were evident during the tournament so that he could take a strong team to represent Limpopo in the national finals.
“The fact that we won three matches on penalties is a cause for concern.
“We will work on our finish as well as stamina because we were flat in the final match.
“Our boys had stage fright on the day and we must work on their confidence,” Sekgobela said.
The principal of the school, Dr Mapula Mofya-Legodi, said she was very proud of the hard work that the school’s personnel, especially the sports committee, did in preparing the team.
She said the management of the school would continue supporting the boys.
“We thank the parents for their support and all the staff for their dedication and support,” she said.
A victory for Rev MP Malatjie in the final of the national Danone Nations Cup will see them jetting off to Brazil to compete against international teams.
South African Schools Football Association Limpopo president, Hulisani Mabasa, said they would support the school when they went to represent the province.
