POLOKWANE – Stanford Lake College’s u/16 boys’ hockey team faced Groblersdal Academy at Pietersburg Hoërskool hockey field last Saturday in the semi-final match of the Limpopo hockey league.
Both teams had early chances to score, and although Stanford Lake College worked hard to control the play, they missed some opportunities in the first half. However, they came out firing in the second half and scored two unanswered goals to win the game.
They met Hoërskool Ben Viljoen in the final. Stanford Lake College started off where they had left off in the previous game, scoring four goals within the first 15 minutes of the first half, including a hat-trick from Adam McGaffin.
Ben Viljoen put in a big effort in the se-cond half by scoring early, but Stanford Lake College put a nail in Ben Viljoen’s coffin with a fifth goal by McGaffin to win the game 5-1 and the u/16 league.
“It has been a great season from the u/16 boys, although it caused a few grey hairs at times. Their work ethic and willingness to learn has been awesome. We look forward to our tournament in August, they really deserve it,” said Shane Friedrichs, SLC’s u/16 hockey coach.
“I would like to thank the parents for their support over the season, especially on Saturday. It was great to see so many of you around.”
