LIMPOPO – Schools around Niani Circuit outside Mutale were urged by the Department of Education to take different sporting codes seriously and showcase their talents.

Simon Malindi, Education Niani Circuit acting manager, spoke at a glittering prize giving ceremony following the Niani Annual Schools Tournament, which was held at the Folovhodwe Venmag grounds last Friday.

“Playing different sporting codes helps learners to show off their God-given talents and one can make a living through playing sports such as soccer and netball, among others. We encourage our learners to take education in the classroom seriously, but we understand that all work and no play, makes Jack (Jill) a dull boy (girl) and they have to participate in various sporting codes,” Malindi said.

According to Malindi, part of the tournament focused on scouting different sports talents among the learners, in order to assist them to develop their talents so they could eventually take up sports as careers, should they wish to do so.

He said the tournament first started last year with only schools around Folovhodwe and Muswodi participating and has now been expanded to all the schools in the Niani Circuit. Learners competed against each other from 29 July until the finals, which were played last Friday.

The tournament is the brainchild of a locally well-known youth developer and businessman, Fhatuwani The Best Rananga, who also donated soccer kits to the teams that reached the finals of the tournament.

“As a youth developer in communities around Folovhodwe, I think about doing things that will benefit children and make a difference to their futures. Participating in the tournament will help them to stay away from the streets and crime. Avoiding things like abusing alcohol and teen pregnancies. We hope to develop future leaders who have a strong sense of responsibility,” Rananga explained.

The results of the finals in soccer and netball, are as follows:

Soccer:

• Madimbo Primary School won 2-1 against Malale Primary School.

• Ratshisase Secondary School won 2-1 against Ratshibvumo Secondary School.

Netball:

• Malinge Primary School won 21-19 against Muswodi Primary School.

• Ratshibvumo Secondary School win 24-11 against Dzimauli Secondary School.
