How to best treat your weave

Aspiring businesswoman, Keitumetse Motlhale, shared her opinion with Review Bonus about using real human hair and synthetic hair extension

POLOKWANE – Motlhale is the owner of Kair Boutique, which operates mainly via bookings on social media platforms.

The 25-year-old says she ventured into the hair styling industry as she has a passion for weaves and wigs.

“Women love wearing hair extensions and I seized the opportunity to become a service provider offering my hair styling services on social media to prospective clients,” she explains.

Motlhale, who is based in Centurion, Gauteng, says it’s not easy running a business online as there are risks involved such as customers receiving the wrong orders or packages getting lost in the mail. She hopes to one day open her own shop. She stocks and sells Peruvian, Brazilian, Mongolian and Indian hair to name but a few.

Asked what the difference between human and synthetic hair was, she says human hair is more expensive than synthetic hair, but human hair is of higher quality and can be reused for a longer period than synthetic hair.

She says although there are high quality synthetic hair available, it doesn’t look quite as good as human hair and isn’t as versatile and can’t be styled and coloured as easily.

She admits human hair takes more maintenance than synthetic hair, but says it is all worth the trouble at the end of the day.

She also gave us her tips for maintaining a weave or a wig.

“I change my weave every six weeks and I wash and condition my hair every second week, that is if I did not curl it. I brush it every night before I go to bed to prevent it getting tangled and I use flexi rods rather than curling irons to curl my hair to avoid damaging it.”

Here is a how to treat your weave:

• Wash at least twice a month

• Don’t use moisturisers, sprays and hair foods directly on the weave.

• Avoid curling hair with hot tools.

• Air dry your hair rather than blowing.

• Use heat defensive spray when heating hair.
