Rebecca Phala: Breaking news with a firm voice
Energy Fm's feisty newsreader is carving her own path in the media industry
POLOKWANE – A newsreader with her nose constantly in the pages of a book and always eager to know more, Rebecca Phala is sure to go places.
Not only is does she deliver news on Energy FM, Rebecca is studying towards honours in political science and majoring in gender studies and public policy,
Growing up in Ga-Mamabolo, in Seleleng village, which she describes as cold and mountainous, she moved to Mamotintane in the Mankweng area.
“I completed my bachelor of arts degree majoring in political science from the University of Limpopo last year, graduating in April,” she said.

She is one of the newest additions to the Energy FM family and looks forward to all the exciting challenges and opportunities ahead.
“I am an avid reader and I am always the centre of attention in my circle of friends, because I love telling stories. The most important part of being a newsreader for me is having the opportunity to inform citizens of what is happening in their surrounding areas and also tell their stories.”
Keeping up to date with the news is one of her favourite passtimes because, she explained, knowing that every hour there is someone somewhere listening to Energy FM, waiting for her to inform them on what is happening around them, is the best feeling. “Talking on the radio has been my childhood dream and I am happy I finally get to live it.”
“Avid reading is the absolute first habit any aspiring newsreader needs to embrace. Tell stories, have people skills, know or at the very least be conversant, and have reading skills of every language, especially the 11 official South African languages, to avoid mispronunciation of names in your delivery,” are her words of advice to those aspiring to join the radio industry.
