Baldwin Kay is a star on the rise

Baldwin Kholofelo Hlongwane is an artist who has well positioned himself for success.

LIMPOPO – Hlongwane, born and bred in Mookgopong, is a singer, songwriter and an overall performer. With roots firmly tucked in the Afro Pop genre, he is an artist to look out for.

“I’m driven by passion and I don’t believe in the best, because best is at its peak, it doesn’t get better, I go for better because better improves every time. I always surround myself with positive minded people. I am God fearing and believe there is nothing good that can come out of me without my God,” he explained.

Starting his career at the age of 14 in 2008, he was then a part of a group called Mookgopong Theatre of Arts & Culture where he met Jouzeph Tema, the one who initially recognised his talent and advised him to record his first single titled ‘Love Hustler’.

He bought his first acoustic guitar in 2012 and learned how to play this by watching Youtube videos.

“That’s the time I fell in love with Afro Pop music as my guitar playing skills improved. Most of my songs are inspired by situations I come across on a daily basis, especially the Sepedi songs. I did my research on how can I sound different in comparison to other musicians, I’ve always wanted to sound. I look up to Ntsikwane Raphesu and Muzo Brothers,” he explained.

Hlongwane has worked with the likes of Shibu Molomo from Worship House, Aretha Nthabiseng Mmereki and Mandla Ntlaks, but explains that opportunities like these weren’t always available to him.

“I’ve been turned down so many times but that taught me to be patient. When I finally got the opportunity to perform at big shows and be in the presence of established people, the public started to have expectations from me,” he shared.

He is currently busy with radio tour promotions for his latest single ‘Ke mmone’ and is also working on his album titled ‘Dumela Moafrika’ which will be available in 2018.

His musical journey has among other things, taught him to be humble and to clearly differentiate his on stage and off stage persona.

“Musically, I’ve learned a lot. I can now sing and play guitar at the same time. My writing skills, voice chord and stage presence has improved.

“There is no elevator to success, you just need to take the stairs, stay focused, be patient, believe in your craft and have room for disappointment,” he concluded.
