Shingirai Mgambiwa, the first student at the University of Limpopo (UL) to successfully the fulfil the requirements for a master’s degree to be awarded cum laude in only eight months, continues to excel in the field of Sociology.
He recently attended ten international research conferences funded by the National Research Foundation, Council for Development of Social Science Research in Africa and the Human Science Research Council.
A statement issued by Johannes Selepe, acting Senior Publications Practitioner at the UL informed that Mgambiwa also boasts two honours degrees – in Sociology and in Psychology obtained in 2014 and 2015 respectively. “Following his master’s studies in 2016 he is currently enrolled for a PhD in Sociology at UL.”
Mgambiwa, 28, hails from Zimbabwe first enrolled at the UL in 2011 as a first-year student in Bachelor of Arts after receiving a scholarship to study in South Africa. He was at the time a second year Bachelor of Science and Administration student at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ).
Mgambiwa is reported to have said that, when he heard that no UL student had ever graduated cum laude with a master’s degree in Sociology he wanted to be that record breaker in just a year.
Described as humble and disciplined he was quoted saying: “To achieve academic greatness, we have to persevere, and strive to be responsible at all times. We ought to be dedicated in all that we do.”
As a keen researcher he is ambitious about finding solutions to socio-economic and socio-environmental issues that negatively affect Africa and the world as a whole. He is quoted to have pronounced that Africa’s socio-economic issues are a detrimental factor that needs careful research and detailed mitigation. “For this reason, in 2015 I started writing and published in the same year. To date, I have nine published articles. Eight of them are being reviewed, five are accepted, and two book chapters are undergoing review,” Mgambiwa reportedly said.
UL Spokesperson, Kgalema Mohuba said they were proud of his achievements and was confident that it would encourage and inspire other students at the institution.
