How to change fruits and veggies into smoothies

You can make the perfect smoothie for your child since fruits and veggies are naturally sweet, loaded with nutrition.

POLOKWANE – Nutritionist Nthabiseng Mamabolo told Polokwane Observer there are simple methods to make your child’s smoothie using fruits and veggies that you can blend up and even easier to customise for breakfast or snack time for school.

“You can make the perfect smoothie for your child since fruits and veggies are naturally sweet, loaded with nutrition and have a great taste too,” Mamabolo said. She added that one of the best ways to help your child eat more fruits and vegetables is to transform them into smoothies. “When they are prepared in this format, your child will most likely enjoy them most of the time, rather than eating them the ‘normal’ way.”

Smoothies you can make:
• Any type of fruit your child likes or prefers ( that can be blended).
• Milk (preferably non-dairy milk because they seem to have a slightly better consistency and less of a tendency to separate after blending).
• Veggies (make sure that you use veggies that are also okay to eat even without cooking like cucumber, carrot etc, otherwise others you can half-cook first to avoid sogginess).
• Frozen banana
• Optional add-ins if you would like.

Directions:
• Add your frozen and non-frozen fruits and veggies to your blender.
• Add the non-dairy milk.
• Add any optional ingredients that you would like to add to customise your child’s smoothie.
• Blend the smoothie really well to make sure that it has a creamy texture so that it will be easy for your child to drink with a straw.
• Serve it in a bottle that will easy to drink using a straw or a sippy cup depending on what your child likes.

“Try using half frozen fruit and half fresh fruit to make it smoother to drink. Allow your child enjoy a different type of drink other  than juice”, Mambolo concluded.
