Gert Sibande TVET College staff visit Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School in eMbalenhle

“We should promote the my-child-is-our-child-culture by looking after every child in our society,” says deputy principal of college.

Gert Sibande TVET college staff recently visited Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School in eMbalenhle to encourage learners to use TVET colleges.

Jabu Mhlabane, acting deputy principal of Innovative and Developments at all GS colleges, said not every learner can afford to go to university after completing matric.

She said the government, therefore, came up with TVET colleges in order for all learners to access tertiary education regardless of background.

Mhlabane said the college is aware that some of the young people are using drugs in eMbalenhle.

“As society leaders, we need to play a pivotal role to build the future of our children and we must stop being judgmental.

“We should promote the my-child-is-our-child-culture by looking after every child in our society.

“If I notice that there are behavioural changes in my neighbour’s child, It is my responsibility to act, and not to point fingers or gossip about him or her problem.

“Call the child and ask how can you assist,” said Mhlabane.

She also used the visit to celebrate her birthday by giving away 10 full school uniforms to learners coming from destitute families.

Mhlabane urged the learners to report any school-related challenges to their teachers who will escalate them to the relevant departments.

Learners also told Mhlabane and her team that their school has a shortage of school furniture such as chairs.

Mhlabane said the college will find out why this is from the school management.
