Little Paws Big Hearts delivers 25 kennels through its Inja Ekhaya kennel project
The project began in September and the first phase of 25 kennels was delivered to identified homes in the Afghanistan and Marikana townships. They still need to build and paint 31 kennels in the second phase.
The first phase of the Little Paws Big Hearts (LPBH ) Inja Ekhaya kennel project has delivered 25 kennels to identified homes in the Afghanistan and Marikana townships of Kinross.
An initiative of Animal-Kind International, they selected and sponsored LPBH out of 76 applicants from around the world to do this project. The project began in September and another 31 kennels need to be built and painted for next year.
“This is an honour that befalls us. LPBH is proud of this achievement,” said Sonja Kempen.
Since the project began, LPBH involved dog owners in the townships, schools, and the community to help build and paint the kennels so that these could be delivered to the identified homes.
“Our kennels are unique and do not have the normal pointed roofs. We showed the recipients how to build these kennels, which could help them start their own business,” said Sonja.

She said this project is the beginning of great things to come and that LPBH wants to continue this project after the 56 kennels have been built.
To make this project exciting, LPBH hosted a kennel paint competition at Lake Umuzi on November 16, where members of the public could let their exterior creative painting designs flow. The winners were Martin and Rene Venter.
“We would love for the community to be more involved and make the next 31 kennels to be painted a bigger event,” said Sonja.
LPBH thanked Lake Umuzi for its venue and for sponsoring the paint. The next planned date for painting is February 15.
