Councillors tackle Standerton’s deteriorating town hall

According to Clr Wilma Venter, the situation is being handled and will be discussed at the next council meeting.

According to Clr Alberto Franco, the current challenges at the Standerton Town Hall are less than ideal. Franco stated that the hall’s roof has been severely damaged since 2022.

To his understanding, the roof has not been fixed due to problems with the municipality’s insurance claims.

“The municipality did place a claim for the damaged roof. However, the insurance company refused to pay out the amount due because proper maintenance was not conducted at the hall,” explained Franco.

He explained that the hall’s wood floors are deteriorating, and holes in several areas are covered by wood blocks in an attempt to ensure safety. Furthermore, the facilities in the hall are completely unsanitary.

“Though the library located next to the hall seems acceptable, maintenance is still required to keep the carpets and roof in good condition,” said Franco.

Franco explained that these challenges could make events hosted at the hall uncomfortable due to the dangers in the building. According to Clr Wilma Venter, the situation is being handled and will be discussed at the next council meeting.
