WATER CRISIS: Councillors bicker over residents in council chambers

Exchange of words echoed between councillors.

Chaos erupted at the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) ordinary council meeting following a safety concern raise by Economic Freedom Fighters councillor, Daniel Khoza.

Khoza accuses the council of not prioritising safety, allowing Trichardt residents who demand water to enter the chamber.

When the council reconvened after a break, the Speaker of the council, Fikile Magagamela, told community members who were standing to leave the chamber. Only those who were seated were allowed to remain.

Exchange of words echoed between councillors.

The mayor said the water crisis is not the municipality’s fault, but that of Rand Water. The bulk water supplier is facing challenges of pumping water at full capacity to the municipality.
