Megan and Marita take first and second place in SA Angling Championships
After the SA Championships both women competed for the SA Nationals trials which in return awarded both with Protea colours.
SECUNDA – Mother-and-daughter duo, Marita and Megan Momberg competed in the South African Angling Championships for the women which was held in Bloemhof, Free State in February.
Mom Marita, who competed in her 17th SA Championship, took this year’s first place and daughter Megan, who competed in her ninth SA Championship, took second place.
According to their knowledge, this is the first time a mother and daughter took both first and second place in the same event.
“It was quite something when our names were announced. We are very happy and blessed by the announcement” said Marita.
She bagged a catch of 250 fish weighing in at 107kg, which earned her a first place win.
Megan came in a close second place and bagged a catch of 90 fish weighing in at 106kg.
The event took place over six days, of which three were practices days and the other three were competing days. Each day consisted of eight hours of angling.
Each day’s tally would consist of five points per fish and 10 points per kg.

The North East Mpumalanga team won a gold medal.
The team of eight women was captained by Mr Hennie Momberg and managed by Mr Petru Venter.
After the SA Championships the Momberg-women competed for the South African national trials and both were awarded with Protea colours.
This was also a first for a mother and daughter to be in the same team in the same year.
The national competition took place straight after the SA Championships and was run over two days with also eight hours of fishing each day.
A true love for fishing runs in this family.
Megan (21) was only five years old when she competed in her first league. She had also appeared twice on the cover of the Bank Angler magazine.
“Fishing is my thing, I love it. I urge others that don’t fish to try this sport,” said Megan.
Angling on a competitive level involves intense physical training.
“It is hard physical work, you are continuously busy and bag heavy fish therefore keeping fit is very important,” said Marita.
Both mother and daughter are going to compete in an event in August in Namibia, depending on the status of the Covid-19 outbreak.
