Toastmasters close the deal in penultimate meeting

Members of Honeydew Toastmasters held their second last meeting virtually as they prepare to close off for the holidays

Avid members of Honeydew Toastmasters Club gathered for their penultimate meeting on November 22 under the theme: Closing the deal.

Club president, Lorenzo Jefferies said the theme was well-suited as this is the time of the year when people are closing deals and getting ready to close the work year. Vice-president of Education Tebogo Mailula said, “Many people are closing off year-end deals but we are also getting ready to close off our year as Toastmasters.”

The first speaker of the evening, Musa Mnguni’s speech was titled ‘Leadership stability for organisational stability’. In it he referenced the turmoil and instability in the management of Eskom.

“There is a correlation between leadership stability and an organisation’s stability – just as there is a correlation between CEO turnover and instability in a company. Instability at the highest level leads to instability in the organisation.”

With her speech titled ‘Enjoy the journey’, the last speaker of the evening, Tebogo Mailula narrated the importance of having a good mentor. She said a mentor is someone older and more experienced. “I have had so many mentors in my life that made the journey all the more interesting.”

Mailula spoke about one of the first mentors she had at the beginning of her career and the lessons he instilled in her.

“He told me not to give up on education but reminded me that no matter how educated one became, you should never look down on other people, and always be respectful. The first year I was there, we had just come back from the festive holidays and he made me greet every single person in the factory and ask about their holidays. He taught me to always take the time to be humane. That is a lesson I never forgot.”
