Traffic in Florida CBD was forced to a halt on Saturday, September 20, after a shootout left one man dead in the street.
According to JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, JMPD officers were patrolling along Goldman Street at about 13:30 when they heard gunshots.
“They immediately responded, coming upon a robbery in progress at a shop on Goldman Street. The officers moved to confront the men, who fled when they saw them.
“Two of the suspects were armed and had allegedly fired shots inside the business. The officers gave chase and managed to apprehend three. One man was fatally wounded during the confrontation on First Avenue.”
Fihla adds that two firearms, both with their serial numbers filed off, were recovered.
The suspects were arrested and detained at the Florida Police Station on charges of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.
“The JMPD commends the swift and decisive action of officers, which led to the successful arrest of the suspects and the recovery of dangerous firearms. The JMPD remains committed to protecting the community and ensuring a safer Johannesburg.”
