Donkeys celebrated on Heritage Day
Beyond the festivities, this was a celebration that reminded people about gratitude and togetherness.
The Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary hosted a lively donkey market to celebrate Heritage Day in a special way.
The market brought the community together to honour the important role donkeys played in South Africa’s history.
Visitors from all around the community came to the sanctuary to enjoy the market, which was filled with the sounds of laughter, chatter, and the gentle braying of donkeys. There was something for everyone to enjoy at the market, whether you’re interested in handmade goods, watching the donkeys enjoy their haystacks while parading the grounds, or educational talks with people and the vendors about the different food and goods being sold.

According to one of the founders of the sanctuary, Lloreen le Roux, Heritage Day is about more than just culture and food; it’s also about remembering the animals that have helped shape communities over time.
“For those of us who know and love donkeys, Heritage Day holds a special meaning,” she said. “It’s a time to honour the enduring bond between humans and donkeys that has been woven into the fabric of our history,” she said.

Lloreen explained that donkeys have been loyal companions to people for centuries, providing transport, helping on farms, and even working in mines.
“Their contribution to our shared history is beyond doubt, from working tirelessly in fields and mines to carrying precious goods across vast distances. They have left a special mark on our history; it is therefore important that we celebrate them,” she said.
The market reminded the guests how valuable the donkeys are, and the sanctuary hoped that by hosting the event, they would encourage people to treat these kind animals with care and respect. At the end of the market, people left with full hearts, smiles on their faces and respect for the stars of the sanctuary who were being celebrated.
