RNW Shavathon brings community together for cancer awareness
Roodekrans residents support cancer warriors through local Shavathon event.
The Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch (RNW), in partnership with the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), hosted a successful Shavathon event on Saturday, July 4, in support of cancer awareness and fundraising.
The Shavathon annual campaign invites South Africans to stand in solidarity with those for whom hair loss is one of the most visible and challenging effects of cancer treatment.

Organised by Melanie Walker, community members were invited to take part by shaving, colouring their hair, or making a donation towards the cause. With a contribution of only R50 per person, residents had the opportunity to do something small, but meaningful, in support of a much bigger cause.

The event was well supported by the local community, with many people arriving throughout the day to participate, donate, and show their support for those affected by cancer.

Local hairdresser Heinrich Marais Swart not only assisted on the day by shaving and cutting participants’ hair, but also joined in personally by cutting his own hair for the cause.

Walker said the aim of the event was not only to raise funds, but also to create awareness around cancer and to remind the community that even small actions can make a real difference. Whether through a haircut, a splash of colour, a donation, or simply showing up in support, every contribution helped add meaning to the day.
RNW expressed its gratitude to everyone who supported the event, from those who volunteered their time to the residents who participated and donated.
