Discovery Primary honoured with prestigious award

Their partnership with Africa Food for Thought helps to bridge the gap for those children who come from disadvantaged families.

Discovery Primary School was recently honoured with a prestigious award for Project of the Year by Africa Food for Thought (AFFT), which has supplied the school’s feeding scheme with nutritious food for the past 10 years.

The award ceremony took place on July 6 at the Weltevreden Methodist Church, and the school was honoured for the amazing partnership they have with AFFT.

In developing countries such as South Africa, where poverty is not only rife but among the highest in the world, feeding schemes are one of the most effective intervention programmes that bridge the gap for those children who come from disadvantaged families.

According to the school’s social worker, Charlotte Mooka, the school is not eligible for a government-funded feeding scheme, leaving a significant gap for those learners from disadvantaged homes. She says AFFT has tirelessly bridged this gap, providing essential sandwiches and fruits to those who might have forgotten their lunch or rely on the program as their primary source of nutrition.

“Teachers cannot teach hungry children; this project has been extremely helpful.

“Additionally, AFFT, in partnership with KFC, provided the school with quarterly food parcels that the learners took home during school holidays, and we also had an Orphans and Vulnerable Children programme where we provided the learners with monthly groceries and offered them mentorship,” said Charlotte.

In conclusion, Charlotte said they are grateful to AFFT for the amazing work that they do in bridging the gap and alleviating poverty in communities.
