There were a number of individual attacks that tried to go off the front, with the most telling being attributed to two of the ProTouch riders.
ProTouch Cycling had eight of their riders on the start line for the 2021 Tshwane Classic elite/ U/23/ junior men’s event which started at 7am on Sunday, 23 May.
The peloton showed from the start that the riders were all keen to be racing and the first hour was covered at a 45km average.
The route was fast, safe and had very little protection from the wind. Although there was a slight breeze on the day, the route would prove a totally different prospect with a howling wind.
There were a number of individual attacks that tried to go off the front, with the most telling being attributed to two of the ProTouch riders.
Callum Ormiston made a move and gained a 25-second advantage over the chasing peloton, as it took quite an effort as well as a number of precious kilometres to bring him back into the fold.
ProTouch rider Rohan du Plooy was sent off to the front and with his big engine, ability as well as his sprinting ability he proved to be a hard man to catch.
With a good gap established by Rohan, the team set about the next task of getting their sprinter across the line in second place.
The plan worked well for the Honeydew-based team as they ended up with four riders in the Top 5 – Rohan in 1st, followed by Gustav Basson in 2nd, Brad Gouveris in 4th place, and Calvin Beneke in 5th place.
