Honeydew equestrians put on a show

Riders at the Honeydew equestrian centre show off their skills at the show jumping event

The Honeydew Equestrian Centre held a training and jumping show event on Sunday 30 May. According to the centre’s stable manager, Martinique van der Westhuizen, a training show is an opportunity for riders to show their experience and confidence in a relaxed environment.

Class 1 began at 8.30am with riders going through the course with poles on the ground. “Even if a rider has only had one lesson prior to the show, they can do the class,” Martinique explained. After each class had completed their jumps, the poles were gradually moved higher. Martinique said there are different types of competition rounds. “Some are to see who is the fastest, and in others riders aim to get the highest score.”

The riders are judged on their ability not to knock off the jump poles, as well as being able to get over the jumps on the first attempt, while aiming for the fastest time and highest score. Penalties are issued when poles are knocked over or when the rider has a horse that refuses to jump.

“For the competition classes the riders who placed in the top of their class received rosettes and sponsored prizes. We are grateful to all the competitors and their trusty steeds for their support on the day,” Martinique concluded.
