High-intensity torture on the CrossFit course

MK Crossfit holds invitational event to showcase the sports growing popularity

The perseverance to fulfil an ambition is born in the endurance to fight through the pain.

A new node in the fitness network, MK CrossFit, hosted the inaugural Rugged SA Games at Constantia Retail Park, 29 May. Just over 30 high-intensity interval training athletes took part in what owner, Morné Klopper, has fought for 10 years to accomplish. The event was part of a greater launch event in collaboration with outdoor technology and equipment retailer, Rugged SA.

CrossFit is a combination of a fast-paced gym routine with an endurance-style race meant to test not only strength and fitness, but stamina and determination. “The competition was structured for mixed male and female teams of two, in two different categories – the RX and Intermediate divisions. The athletes had to work together to complete the workouts in a specified time bracket for the best possible score,” explained Morné, who opened his facility in April this year.

He describes CrossFit as a lifestyle characterised by safe, effective exercise and sound nutrition, which can be used to accomplish any personal health goal. “The programme works for everyone; people who are just starting out and people who have trained for years, raise your standards with CrossFit based training regimes and routines. The magic is in the movement,” states Morné.

All fitness combatants that took part on the day were there by special invitation, but future events will be open to the greater public. First names on the trophy in the RX division were Johan van Deventer and Che Martens, with Lizelle Pieters and Henco van der Westhuizen earning the Intermediate division title. The winners left with gift hampers, Rugged SA and a variety of unique vouchers.

“We saw these key events as an opportunity to showcase both MK CrossFit and Rugged SA as leaders in our respective fields collaborating together. The Rugged SA Games was the first of many such events, establishing a long and productive partnership,” concluded Morné. Maintain momentum is now key to lifting the weights of expectancy and success.
