ProTouch narrowly misses out on a win

ProTouch Continental Cycling’s plan was to make sure that they were represented in every move, as most of the teams were represented in the break.

The Joburg Classic Race kicked off to a cold start on Saturday, June 12 as the teams headed to the Tarlton Raceway as early as 07:30.

The race was fast from the gun, resulting in a minor crash at the back of the peloton in the early stages, but seven riders managed to get away and establish a gap of just under a minute.

It was almost impossible for anyone to chase down the break, with ProTouch rider Gustav Basson not feeling well. It was clear that the sprint finish would be in the hands of Calvin Beneke as Rohan du Plooy and others controlled the attacks and movements in the peloton.

The gap continued to grow and went out to almost two minutes as it started to become clear that this was the move that would stay away for the day.

Coming into the finish, the seven-man breakaway riders were all together, and Jacques Janse van Rensburg attacked with 500m to go. The riders were quick to respond and the sprint was on.

ProTouch’s Calvin narrowly missed out on a win, as Chris Jooste finished second and ultimately David Maree came in first around him, as they hit the finish mat.
