Amateur and club rugby to resume in August

“All amateur and club rugby had been put on hold until the end of the month, but the provinces will be allowed to move to return-to-play should they deem it safe to do so, considering a review of the status of Covid-19 in their regions."

On Tuesday, July 27 SA Rugby announced that all amateur and club rugby, currently suspended due to Covid-19 regulations, will be permitted to resume on August 2.

This decision was taken after detailed reviews by the various provincial unions. Teams will be required to implement the return-to-play safety guidelines.

According to SA Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux, provincial unions will be allowed to decide on the best course of action in their own areas of jurisdiction, following the amended level 3 lockdown regulations announced on Sunday, July 25.

“All of this is subject to SA Rugby’s return-to-train and play guidelines, as well as any other regulations published in the Government Gazette.

All amateur and club teams are encouraged to engage with their unions to establish what the safety protocols involve.

According to Roodepoort Rugby Club Chairman, Mathys Booyens, the club will be part of a Lions meeting that will be held on Thursday, July 29 to discuss a way forward.

Schools rugby falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Basic Education and the season is still suspended.
