Muscle Riders getting ready for the 947 Ride Joburg
Any donations would be greatly appreciated and any information can obtained from Robert Scott at robert@mdsa.org.za.
Johannesburg’s marquee cycling event has been earmarked for mid-November and any avid lycra lover will assure you that preparation begins many moons in advance. The 947 Ride Joburg brings together the entire South African cycling community, and the reasons for taking on the torturous nearly 100km slog through the smog is as varied as the number of entrants.
Big events bring big gestures and this year, as many years before, the Muscle Riders will be pulling on the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa’s (MDFSA) colours to spread the message about the incurable genetic disorder. “The Muscle Riders are made up of cyclists who care for those affected by muscular dystrophy and want to assist us in bringing hope to their lives as much as possible” says Robert Scott, MDFSA Gauteng Project Manager.
“There is no cure for Muscular Dystrophy and it affects people of all age groups, races and genders. It is a devastating disease that causes muscle wasting and progressive muscle weakness. As a result, affected people need all the assistance they can get as time goes on. Muscle Riders cycle to help us generate awareness and funds to render services to those most in need,” he added.
The 947, as it is colloquially known, is the Muscle Riders’ dedicated focus but plans do exist to broaden their race calendar. Fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and all effected relatives dedicate their time and efforts raising funds leading up to the race. Any donations, no matter how big or small in support of their efforts would be greatly appreciated, and any information can be obtained from Robert at robert@mdsa.org.za.
He concludes, “This disease is rare but the more awareness we can create, the more we can assist those who desperately need assistance. The support of the community means hope. If you participate in the 947 race, make it count. You can do it for yourself, but you can also do it for a cause. Get on your bike and in our colours. We hope to see you there.”
