2022 FIFA world cup qualifiers are well underway. How are qualifying groups structured and which games are worth looking out for?

The stage is set and Qatar will be hosting the next football world cup which is scheduled to kick off on the 21st of November 2022.
Qatar automatically qualifies by being the host of the tournament but countries from the rest of the world now have a chance to book their spot as one of the 32 countries that will be competing in the World Cup. Continents and some countries have been put together into six confederations in order to compete in the qualifying games.
All of the different federations are currently playing their qualifying rounds. South Africa’s Bafana Bafana is also participating in the qualifying rounds. Our national team is in Group G, alongside neighbouring Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and the Ghanaian Black Stars. Each team will play each other twice. Bafana Bafana have already Zimbabwe with the game ending in a stalemate. and Bafana Bafana are set to face Ghana today the 6th of September and then face Ethiopia. CAF which is Africa’s confederation is only awarded five spots in the world cup.
Europe which falls under Uefa is the biggest confederation and is allocated 13 spots in the world cup finals. The European qualifying round also has the most teams with 55 teams competing for a slot. Most of the teams that did well in the Euro 2020 which was held earlier this year have been doing well in their groups including this year’s champions Italy who has continued its unbeaten record and is sitting at the top of Group C. There are two stages to the European qualifiers, the first round is the group stage and the second round is the play-off stage. The final matches of this Uefa qualification round will be played on the 16th of November later this year.
The AFC Asian cup is the qualifying round for many Asian countries as well as Middle Eastern countries and also Australia. The group is made up of 12 teams and 4 or 5 teams can advance through to the world cup finals.
CONCACAF is the North American confederation of countries and consists of 8 countries. The first matches for this group have already taken place with Mexico beating Jamaica by two goals to one, El Salvador drew with the USA nil nil. The other matches are taking place today. The North American group has 3 or 4 places available for the 2022 world cup.
The OFC Oceania Football Confederation makes up the last part of this world cup qualifier puzzle and is made up of 11 small island countries like New Zealand, Papa New Guinea and Tonga. This group’s qualifying round is only going to get underway in January 2022 and there are only 0 -1 places available for the world cup finals in 2022.
CONMEBOL is the South American confederation and is made up 10 countries from the continent. The group has been allocated 4 or 5 spots in the Qatar 2022 world cup. Brazil is sitting comfortable at the top of the South America qualifier with Argentina in second place.
