First-timers join Ruimsig parkrun as they kick off the new year

Ruimsig parkrun is encouraging the community to join and volunteer at least once every three months as volunteers are needed to keep the parkrun alive.

Saturday, January 1 saw the Ruimsig parkrun start the new year with 135 participants who ran, jogged and walked the course, 23 being first-timers. Representatives from 14 different clubs took part.

New Year’s Day marked event number 84 and according to the organisers it was made possible by 20 dedicated volunteers who took the time to ensure that all was in order.

The volunteers where Vernon James, Carin van der Schyf, Christine van der Schyf, Magda Botha, Riaan Botha, Garth Smith, Carina Wilson, Chantell Coetzer, Jeremy Foster-Jones, Jackie Louter, Johan Oosthuizen, Sharon Jonker, Vuyiseka Mkele, Courtney Buckley, Hofmeyr Gerber, Cara Gerber, Nicola Gerber, Brian Watt, Lenie Muller and Ruan Buys.

Francois Hanekom was congratulated for reaching the 50 parkrun milestone, while 11 runners recorded new personal bests.

The Ruimsig parkrun female record is held by Carina Swiegers who recorded a time of 19:19 on January 5, 2019 at event number 19.

The male record is held by Juandre de Bruin who recorded a time of 16:19 on July 13, 2019 at event number 44. He also holds the age grade course record.

Ruimsig parkrun is encouraging the community to join and volunteer at least once every three months, as volunteers are needed to keep the parkrun alive.

Ruimsig parkrun started on September 15, 2018 and since then 10 900 participants have completed 46 189 parkruns covering a total distance of 230 945km; 9 747 new personal bests have been achieved while 588 individuals have volunteered 1 701 times.
