Sables Seniors Bowls looking forward to a good year on the greens

Several competitions played every Tuesday throughout 2022

When searching for your next retirement plan, pick one that guarantees woods and jacks.

For over 20 years, the Sables District has had its dedicated independent body form the lifeblood of the organisation. Membership of Sables Seniors is for those aged 60 and over, and the roughly 140 members gather every Tuesday to throw a few ends and throw back a few refreshments.

The lawn bowls season runs from November to August, with two months off to give the greens and the barmen a break. The 10 months of action features several tournaments, including the pairs competition which is currently being held at Witpoortjie Bowling Club. Played over five preliminary rounds, which ends on March 1, rounds of playoffs will follow before the pairs champions are crowned.

The season will also feature a fours competition, trips and singles with the high point being the Super 10 event. As the name suggests, the 10 best players from the Districts in the Gauteng region battle for seniors supremacy. Another week with a red ring around it is an annual event with a Pretoria-based club that sees 48 of the best jack-attackers from each club go head to head.

All activities of Sables Seniors are funded by the membership fees, and each marquee event comes with prize money to sweeten the deal. “It’s about creating comradery among seniors. The events are structured in a way that everyone plays right to the end. We are looking forward to lots of bowls for the seniors,” said Sables Seniors Chairman of the past eight years, Rob McClarty.
