Battling to be the best in the West

Round two of the West Rand Netball League takes place as teams gear up to play and secure a spot in upcoming high-performance tournaments.

As netball season kicks off, West Rand (WR) Netball hosts their second league at Hoërskool Bastion for competing teams.

On May 18, the junior and senior teams made their way to the court to go head-to-head for four quarters and were welcomed with a short prayer and acknowledgement of their dedication to their vice chairperson of WR Netball, Sonika Gilman.

“We are trying to develop the juniors, especially our U19 girls, for the upcoming Telkom Netball Championships from June 23 to 28 in Pretoria, so the league games are considered practice sessions for them.

“We have four regions participating in the league, and in those regions, they will play in the development leagues, which is what WR Netball has started this year,” Sonika said.

In the third round, Bastion Seniors went against Fochville Super Stars in a very physical, nail-biting four quarters where Fochville led in the first two quarters, motivating Bastion to come back stronger and take the win by a whopping 30–13 points.

Sonika adds that WR Netball has a legacy programme where developing teams have workshops where the players work with the coaches, umpires and technical officials to either get their umpire grading and coaching certificate registered with Netball South Africa (NSA) or learn to work as a technical official for games and any NSA affiliated tournaments.
