Running: A life long passion for a police constable

Roodepoort police officer Constable Kennedy Sekhuthe embarks on other mental testing running journeys.

After conquering the gruelling 2024 Comrades Marathon, Roodepoort police officer Constable Kennedy Sekhuthe is continuing to set his sights on even greater challenges.

For Sekhuthe, running is a lifelong passion that ignites his spirit. He says his passion for long distances stems from his patient nature, allowing him to tap into a deep reservoir of endurance and mental toughness.

“My passion started at a very young age back at home. However, I stopped due to the lack of facilities where I come from; on my arrival in the big city, I continued where I left,” he recalls.

“I call myself an endurance runner because I go for longer distances, which my body can take. It does not come easy to prepare for them as they take much time.”

Sekhuthe is set to embark on a 120km trail run called the Cappadocia Ultra Trail, set to take place in Turkey this weekend (October 19 to 20).

He says he will not only run the 120km, but it includes another 3 730m of climbing while carrying your own water, food and kit.
“I am expecting to have a very good race, as there are ranks and points that I will achieve. This race will also prepare him for other big races like the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc that happens every year in August.

“Strategies that I use to train for ultra races are that I focus on the end goal by balancing family, friends and social life. I plan two sessions a day to prepare for the race, and I train day and night. I believe it is worth it.

“I got the inspiration to push beyond the limits in ultras after noticing that not everyone is willing to run far, and this can take me very around the globe.”

Moreover, Sekhuthe is also planning to participate in a run in Aliwal North, the 160km Longmore forest run trail, and the 25km World Trail Champs in Korea.

“I want to see myself empowering young people, making them understand that sports connect and can make you heal if bothered. One day, I will be able to tell my story – that patience is endurance,” he concludes.
