Speedos and solidarity: Florida runners join the Daredevil Run for Men’s Health

The run has become a cornerstone of cancer awareness in South Africa, with thousands of participants nationwide.

The Florida Running Club once again joined forces and ran the Hollard Daredevil Run, which is an annual event aimed at raising awareness for prostate and testicular cancer.

This year’s event, marking the 15th anniversary, took place on November 1.

Donning their purple Speedos, the men ran the 5km run from the Discovery Bowling Club to Ontdekkers Road and back, with multiple supporters along the way cheering and encouraging them in support of a good cause. The event’s lighthearted and humorous approach belies its serious mission: To encourage men to prioritise their health and well-being.

Tessa Hellard, the chairperson for the Florida Running Club, emphasised the club’s commitment to supporting the initiative.

“We have been participating in this race for about four years now. We do this every year because we have had a lot of members who have been affected by different kinds of cancer,” she explained.

“It’s part of our duty and part of who we are to support a great initiative.”

Tessa highlighted the importance of cancer awareness, particularly among men.

“We’ve seen firsthand the impact of cancer on our members and their families. By participating in the Hollard Daredevil Run, we hope to inspire others to take proactive steps towards early detection and treatment.”

The event’s success relies on the collective efforts of organisations like the Florida Running Club, dedicated to making a difference.

As the runners crossed the finish line, their purple Speedos were a symbol of solidarity and reiterated the club’s pledge to continue supporting this vital cause.

“We’re proud to be part of this movement, and we look forward to many more years of running for a purpose,” says Tessa.
