Man of the match glory for hockey player

Local hockey player, Lyle Barlow, shines with man-of-the-match performance in SA Masters debut.

Lyle Barlow, a dedicated hockey player, won himself a man-of-the-match title against Australia’s A team during the 2024 Hockey Masters World Cup that took place in Cape Town.

“This achievement is something I will carry with me until I decide to retire,” shared Lyle, feeling very proud.

“There aren’t many people that can say they have played any sport against the likes of Australia, France, and Germany.”

The South African U35 + Masters team played a total of five games, drawing one against Germany and winning two, including the Internal Masters Cup (IMC) final against the Australia IMC (second) team.

This remarkable achievement is the culmination of Lyle’s lifelong passion for hockey, which began when he first took to the field at the tender age of six.

“It still feels so unreal to know that I was able to compete in the national colours and to compete at a level such as the Masters Hockey World Cup. I still think back to a couple of weeks ago and ended up smiling to know that I was there. I was singing the national anthem before that whistle went to start the match. It’s a feeling that can’t be explained, but I was present at the moment and took all of that in,” shared Lyle.

Lyle’s journey to the SAs was not one without its challenges. He has previously attempted to make the team but fell short, leaving him doubting his chances of making the team.

“Never give up on your dreams; as cliché as it sounds, it’s never too late. Keep working hard; respecting yourself, your coaches/ mentors, and especially your opposition will go a long way in achieving your dreams.”

Going forward, Lyle hopes to continue playing competitive hockey and try to make it to the next World Cup set to take place in the Netherlands in the next two years.
