As the new year unfolds for riders at Aragon Stable, they are gearing up for an exciting season of competing against their peers in their upcoming South African Showjumping graded competitions, as well as the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) National Championships.
On January 8, the riders galloped into their first training session for the season, and despite the weather conditions, their passion for riding did not stop them. Head instructor Jennifer Jacoby emphasised the importance of their pre-season training after a well-deserved rest during the December holidays.

For many riders, the new season brings a fresh start and a renewed focus on their equestrian goals. Jennifer explains that as the riders come back from their holiday, their top priority is fitness, not just for themselves but for their horses.
“Our main focus at the moment is fitness and obedience between lessons. Showjumping demands a unique blend of precision, agility, strategy, and trust between horse and rider. A successful showjumping round is all about your horse’s rhythm and balance. Maintaining a consistent rhythm on the course allows your horse to gauge distances accurately as well as keep them balanced, allowing them to take off and land smoothly over each jump.

“I incorporate this in every first training every year to remind the riders of the hard work that comes with preparing for the shows. I also include coursework that includes grid exercises into their horse’s weekly schedule to improve their jumping technique as well as their riding skills.

“This year I expect the riders to show determination and courage. These competitions are not easy, and the stakes are always high, but I know that they will do their best,” Jennifer adds.
With their sights set on glory and a packed calendar of competitions ahead, these dedicated riders are ready to take on the challenge and make their mark on the showjumping circuit.
