Rising star: 16-year-old makes Springbok team
The young rugby sensation makes history by being selected for the national U16 squad.
Hoërskool Roodepoort’s Likamva Thumani has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first learner from his school in 20 years to be selected for the U16 Springboks rugby team.
“I’m very grateful to have made the team. It means a lot to me and my future, as I aspire to play professionally, maybe even in the next Rugby World Cup with the Springboks. I’m also very grateful for the support I have received from my coach and family,” Thumani said.
The 16-year-old rugby sensation, initially a soccer player, discovered his true calling on the rugby field with the encouragement of his coaches and family. His passion and talent have earned him numerous accolades, including being named the district’s second-best sportsman of the year.
His impressive rugby career is marked by notable achievements, such as scoring a try in the first 15 seconds of the Noordvaal Cup last year. He has also been recognised as the best rugby player in his age category at Hoërskool Roodepoort and the best backline player of the year.
Additionally, as part of the Iqhawe Week (where he was scouted for this achievement), he currently has the most tries scored and best try scorer with a fourth riser in his age category. As he looks to the future, he encourages others to be courageous.
“I would like to encourage other people to follow their dreams and be the best they can be.”
