Panorama Running Club hit with ultramarathon fever

Braving the elements, Panorama Running Club runners prove their mettle at the Two Oceans Marathon.

The Panorama Running Club had a strong showing at the prestigious Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town from April 5–6, with athletes competing in the gruelling 56km ultramarathon and 21km half marathon.

Despite a disappointing injury to their road captain, Maritagane Maphetho, the rest of the team rose to the challenge and delivered impressive performances. According to chairperson Gangatha Mkele, one of the standout athletes was Slungile Bosoga, who completed both the ultramarathon and the half marathon, an incredible feat of endurance.

Another club stalwart, Jacqueline van Schoor, crossed the ultramarathon finish line in 06:57:57, just minutes before the seven-hour cut-off. This marks her ninth ultramarathon, and she’s already setting her sights on her 10th next year, which will earn her a coveted permanent blue race number.

Jacqueline summed up the brutal conditions faced by runners, saying, “The wind was bad last year, but the heat was worse this year.”

Despite the challenging conditions, the Panorama Running Club athletes showed remarkable determination and perseverance.

Gangatha further adds that the club’s next major milestone is the 2025 Comrades Marathon, where an impressive 17 Panorama athletes are set to participate, the highest number since the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are proud of the amazing achievements of both our long-standing and new members. Later this year, the club will host the Clearwater Mall 10km Race and 5km Fun Run on August 23. Clearwater Mall is turning 21 years old, and they’re celebrating in style with an epic running event you won’t want to miss! Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just in it for the fun, save the date,” said Gangatha.
