Crawfordian teen joins Italian pro rugby team
A Crawfordian is a living example of how hard work and talent can lead to success.
As the final school bell rang, manifesting the end of another successful year, Crawford International Ruimsig’s Olerato Mutungwa feels a sense of pride and excitement for the future.
The Grade 12 learner was selected to play for Central West U19 in a highly competitive rugby competition in Vanderbijlpark because of his passion and dedication. Wes, a powerful squad composed of various players from Jeppe, St John’s, St Stithians, and other elite rugby schools, defeated his team by just one point despite their efforts. Soon after, Italian scouts began to take notice. One of them was struck by Olerato’s perseverance, technical skill, and flexibility on the pitch.
Olerato has formally agreed to a professional rugby contract with Benetton Rugby Club in Treviso, and he will start playing professionally there next year.

The community also responded to Olerato’s achievements, with one reader, Florence Kalipa, commenting on Crawford’s Facebook post.
“Amazing and well deserved. As you always said, if you’re hungry for it, you will never allow anyone to take your food. Well done and congratulations to you and your parents,” said Florence.
Olerato expressed his feelings for this big opportunity.
“It’s nerves and change, but I’m excited, I want to see what the sport has in store for me, and hopefully I’ll play this sport for a long time.”
He outlined the impact his coaches have had on his career so far.
“My coaches mean more than anything to me. I go to a special breakdown academy, which pushes me to the limits. Last year, my confidence in this sport was not high because I felt like I couldn’t achieve what I wanted. Thanks to my coaches who made time for me, I achieved this opportunity,” said Olerato.
* This article was amended after it was published. The article previously stated that Olerato was selected for the U19 Central West team who played against a Central West team comprising of players from various elite schools, and [Olerato’s] team lost. The team that defeated Central West, is in fact Wes. The Roodepoort Record apologises for any confusion caused.
