Roodepoort officer breaks record in trail run race
Constable Kennedy Sekhuthe wins the Salt Pans Ultra Marathon with a record-breaking time.
Constable Kennedy Sekhuthe from the Roodepoort police once again demonstrated exceptional endurance and mental fortitude by conquering the 100km Salt Pans Ultra Marathon in Botswana held in late September.
Running through challenging pan sites, Sekhuthe finished in first place in an impressive time of 12:26:00, marking the second-best time in the race’s four-year history. This achievement also set a new record on the course’s inaugural route.
“I feel very privileged to win this race. It’s part of the national league, recognised internationally in Ultra trail Mont Blanc in France,” he said.

Sekhuthe’s preparation for this race was rigorous, and it focused on gravel runs, hill repeats, and mental conditioning, ensuring he was ready for the demanding distance. He has many races under his belt, including the Whale of Trail race, RMB Ultra-rail Drakensburg, and Comrades Marathon.

His advice to other aspiring trail runners is to take your time, do a few things well, and there’s no need to rush your goals.
“This distance demands not just physical strength but a calm mind.”
He admitted that the race’s length also meant sacrificing quality time with loved ones, but balanced this with reading books about upcoming races and maintaining strong bonds with family and friends.
Looking ahead, Sekhuthe is set to challenge himself further at the Ultra Trail Cape Town scheduled for November 21 to 23, aiming to continue his streak of excellence in ultra-distance running.
