Judo academy celebrates major milestone as three earn black belts
A coach and a judoka graded to their first Dan while head instructor Sensei Danie Bruwer graded to 7th Dan.
Doryoku Judo Academy (DJA) is celebrating a proud moment in its history, as three of its members successfully graded to black belts.
Coach Niel Bruwer and fellow judoka Marcel Roux both graded for their first Dan, known in judo as ShoDan. Their grading followed an intensive four-day course held in November, during which candidates prepared for the rigorous evaluation.
The formal grading took place at the end of November in Manufacta.
To earn their first Dan, candidates were required to demonstrate Nage No Kata, a highly technical set of throwing forms, complete a written examination on the history and philosophy of judo, and showcase an extensive range of judo techniques with precision, control, and understanding.
Despite facing a serious shoulder injury that required surgery immediately after the grading, Marcel pushed through with exceptional grit and determination to earn his black belt.
Niel delivered an outstanding performance and achieved the highest overall score of all first Dan candidates, a remarkable accomplishment that highlights his technical ability and dedication to the sport.
Adding to the list of achievements, DJA’s founder and head instructor, Sensei Danie Bruwer, achieved the prestigious rank of 7th Dan.
This senior grade is not earned through a physical grading but is awarded based on stringent criteria, including an extensive and deep understanding of judo, decades of contribution to the sport, and significant involvement in the international development of judo.
Sensei Danie now joins the small and highly respected group of 7th Dans in South Africa, a testament to his lifelong commitment to judo.
Doryoku Judo Academy expressed pride in all three judoka, noting that their achievements reflect the academy’s core values of perseverance, discipline, and continuous improvement.
