Judo student grades to first Dan

The ShoDan is a massive achievement requiring years of training and dedication.

KJK Judo Academy is celebrating yet another major milestone as one of their judoka, Shasa-Mercédez Erasmus (19), has graded to her first Dan, called ShoDan in Judo.

Grading to Black Belt requires years of dedication, demonstration of Nage No Kata, a highly technical set of throwing forms, completion of a written examination on the history and philosophy of judo, and showcasing an extensive range of judo techniques with precision, control, and understanding.

The grading took place in November at the 4 Sport Judo Club, hosted by Judo South Africa and assessed by highly respected grading masters.

Shasa’s journey in the sport began at a tender age, inspired by her brother’s footsteps. She recalls being instantly captivated by it, loving it from the very first try.

She shared that she was supposed to be graded at the age of 18, but due to an injury, she was not able to do so. However, she refused to be deterred and graded a year later.

Instead, she channelled her passion into dedicated hard work, and her perseverance paid off. Earning that first Dan was not just a milestone but the beginning of a new chapter – one that promises exciting adventures and opportunities.

“I’m very proud of myself for putting on such a formidable performance. I put in many hours of training, as it requires mental, physical, and emotional readiness,” she said, beaming with pride.

“I’m looking to do more coaching and grow into it.”

Her other notable achievements include a gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships and silver at the South African Championships in fighting, as well as a bronze medal at the South African Championships in Kata.

For aspiring judokas, Shasa’s message is straightforward: “Keep your eyes on the prize and put in the work. It’s that simple.”
