Curro Wilgeheuwel hosts thrilling inter-house sport day
The day was filled with competitive spirit as Curro Wilgeheuwel learners laced up for a sports day.
Curro Wilgeheuwel hosted an exciting and energetic sports day, bringing together learners and staff for a day filled with competition, teamwork and school spirit.
The event featured a range of activities, including senior soccer and netball matches, and highlighted the importance of physical activity and camaraderie among learners.
According to Curro’s head of sports Rupert Hougaard, planning the event came with its challenges as unpredictable weather conditions throughout the week made preparations difficult.
However, Hougaard believed this initiative aimed not only to promote friendly competition but also to encourage learners to stay healthy and active. He emphasised that in a modern world dominated by technology, social media and short-form video platforms, physical activity is more important than ever.
The learners were divided into four sports groups, which include Siana, Gijima, Baleka, and Kitima. Despite a few inconveniences experienced, players raised their level of performance, and house rivalries became more evident as teams fought hard for victory.

One of the highlights of the day was the senior netball competition.
“The early matches were played on the grass court, but as the intensity of the games increased, the matches were moved to the main court,” he expressed.
In the end, Gijima delivered a strong performance and was named the inter-house netball winner.
The senior boys’ seven-a-side soccer tournament also drew plenty of excitement. Played on the astro field, the fast-paced matches kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Each house showed determination and pride throughout the competition.

The overall points for the day were as follows:
• Siana – 9 points
• Gijima – 9 points
• Baleka – 4 points
• Kitima – 5 points
Following the success of this year’s event, Hougaard confirmed that the school plans to make sport day an annual tradition, ensuring that future learners will also have the opportunity to take part in the celebration of sport, health and community spirit.
