Wilgies crowned Discovery Cup champs

Curro's U10 football team shine in tournament encounter.

Curro Wilgeheuwel (Wilgies) U10 soccer team delivered an exceptional performance to claim the prestigious Discovery Cup title after an outstanding unbeaten tournament campaign.

The Wilgies’ journey to the final was remarkable as they began with a commanding 12–0 victory over Linden before continuing their impressive form with a 5–0 win against Crawford Lonehill and a convincing 4–0 triumph over Bryandale. Although the scoreline suggested a victory, Bryandale proved to be determined opponents, forcing the Wilgies boys to work hard for every opportunity.

In the quarter-final, King David Primary School presented another stern test, but the team’s discipline and determination secured a well-earned 2–0 victory. A thrilling 2–1 win over St Declan’s School for Boys in the semi-final booked their place in the Discovery Cup final, where they completed an unforgettable campaign to be crowned champions.

Reflecting on the team’s success, the head of primary school sport, Rupert Hougaard, praised both the players and those who supported them throughout the season.

“This was a massive victory for our boys, and I couldn’t be prouder. They practised throughout the exam period and showed true resilience when facing tough opponents,” he said.

“I must also commend their coach, Laurenzo Borman, for his hard work, dedication and passion for this team, as well as all the parents who supported the boys and stood by us throughout the tournament,” he added.

Borman highlighted the qualities that defined the team’s success.

“Throughout the tournament, the boys displayed excellent teamwork, resilience, determination and sportsmanship. Every match presented a new challenge, and the players consistently rose to the occasion, showing incredible commitment and character.”

Wilgies executive head Lisa Dowds congratulated the team on their remarkable achievement.

“This win is proof that commitment, hard work and dedication pay off. I’m exceptionally proud of the team and their coach,” said Dowds.
