Poorte loses all rugby matches against dominant Randfontein

Teine claimed victories across all divisions to remain on course for a top-of-the-log finish.

Roodepoort Rugby Club (Poorte) endured a difficult afternoon after suffering defeats across all divisions against Randfontein Rugby Club (Teine) during their Pirates Grand Challenge fixtures on Saturday, July 11.

The games were played at Hoërskool Florida, with Randfontein producing dominant performances to sweep the day’s fixtures.

The U9 side suffered the heaviest defeat, going down 71–17, while the U21 team lost 38–22. Randfontein’s third team also secured a commanding 73– 0 victory after the match was stopped 25 minutes early because Roodepoort did not have enough replacement players available on the bench.

The second team also fell short, losing 29– 0.

The first team match was cancelled shortly before half-time. Randfontein assistant coaches Hennie van Eck and Willem van Loggerenberg confirmed that the score at the time, 26–5 in Randfontein’s favour, will stand and will be recorded on the official league log without amendment.

Commenting on the matches, the coaches said they were pleased to collect the maximum five log points, keeping the club on track to finish at the top of the standings.

“We’re happy to get the five log points that were on offer. It helps us stay on track to finish top of the log.”

The coaches agreed that a Poorte and a Teine match is always tough because of the hype around it.

They added that the victory also ensured Randfontein retained the floating trophy contested between the two clubs.

“We’ve held on to the floating trophy since 2022, when we beat Roodepoort 43–17, and we’re proud to still have it.”

Looking ahead, Randfontein will travel to Alberton Rugby Club for their final league fixture on July 25.

“A win will guarantee us a top-of-the-log finish and home playoff matches. The playoffs start on August 8, and we’ve already secured the right to host the quarter-final. If we win that, the semi-final will also be played at Randfontein,” the coaches said.
