Alex squad shines in Mayoral Cup preliminaries

ALEXANDRA - Alexandra's 16-man squad that played in preliminary stages of the 2013 Mayoral Cup tournament at the Nike Stadium in Pimville, Soweto, has advanced to the knockout stages of the competition.

They beat both the Rand Central and Orange Farm teams 2-0 each to stake their right to play in the knockout stages of the Cup on a date still to be announced by the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association. The two games were played over the weekend.

“I am delighted with the fact that our boys won both their games and advanced to the next stage of the competition,” said the Association’s technical director Mxolisi Mngomezulu.

Mngomezulu said he was proud about the commitment to the game shown by the boys in the field and believes that if they can carry that momentum to the knockout stages, Alexandra should be able to reclaim the trophy, after winning the inaugural one in 2010.

As former champions in the inaugural tournament, Mngomezulu said he believed his team can go all the way. “We have assembled the cream of the crop of players in the Association’s league in order to stake a formidable claim to the trophy. We shall be going into the knockout stages of the Cup with one thing in mind: to win the tournament and bring back the Mayoral Cup to where it belongs – Alexandra,” said a confident Mngomezulu.
