Local actor Michael Potter continues to make moves on both the small and big screens

WOODMEAD – Michael Potter describes his journey as an actor thus far as unexpected, challenging and unbelievably rewarding.

The Woodmead resident not only stars in the new prime-time sitcom Ubettina Wethu on SABC 1 but he is also set to star in the upcoming American horror-comedy film Slumber Party Massacre.

With a long-time passion for acting, since the age of five, Potter aims to share his love and passion of the arts with the community and beyond.

“I have been fascinated with the craft of storytelling whether it be acting or writing. It was always my favourite passion and I am still in shock that I finally get to do it as a profession,” he said.

Potter describes his journey as an actor thus far as unexpected, challenging and unbelievably rewarding considering the fact that the industry is quite difficult to get a ‘break into’.

“So much of it is out of your hands; you need to make friends with rejection, be frugal and savvy with resources and most importantly, develop an iron confidence.”

According to Potter, developing as a person was one of the most important challenges he had to overcome. “Learning humility, dedication and courage were necessary for me to develop a work ethic and stay focused.”

He noted that acting was also a financial volatile industry so learning how to manage, save and invest money were massive learning curves and a necessity to survival.

Potter’s journey, however, proved to be quite fruitful as he gained a number of mentionable roles over the years. Aside from currently playing Brandon in Ubettina Wethu and an upcoming role as John in the remake of Slumber Party Massacre, Potter also played Bobby in Alastair Orr’s film Triggered.

“It was my first role and to play such a nuanced and interesting character among a high pedigree of actors as a first role was a complete blessing,” he said.

Potter’s role on Ubettina Wethu has been a journey of self-discovery and learning as it is his first television role. “Bonding with my fellow actors while developing my craft has been nothing short of a pleasure. Every day I feel an overwhelming excitement to get in front of the camera and discover new parts of the character and the show.”

You can catch him in Ubettina Wethu at 7.30pm on Monday to Wednesday on SABC 1.
