Remain vigilant with construction projects
SANDTON – Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and responsible about their personal security at all times.
A recent attempted housebreaking has once again highlighted the importance of remaining vigilant when there is construction projects in your neighbourhood.
According to a statement by Fidelity ADT, there were three housebreaking incidents (two in Gallo Manor and one in Morningside) reported in August where the common denominator apparently appeared to be contractors working on nearby projects.
In the more recent incident which occurred in Morningside on September 15, five suspects gained access to a property by cutting the razor wire between two homes.
The homeowner’s neighbour had a construction company renovating the house. The homeworker fortunately spotted the intruders and shouted at them, causing them to flee the property by jumping over the wall.
A chase ensued and a Fidelity ADT reaction officer managed to apprehend one of the suspects and handed him over to Sandton police.
Aslam Munsur, business development manager for the private security firm, noted that it was important for homeowners to verify potential contractors before employing them.
“It is important to limit the movement of contractors to their site and most security providers [should] search building sites after hours to ensure no workers are still there,” said Munsur.
Sandton police spokesperson Captain Bheki Xulu added that officers have also taken note of burglary incidents related to construction work in Bryanston and Woodmead.
Most incidents take place on weekdays between 07:00 and 18:00.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and responsible for their personal security at all times.
