Health professionals are urging South Africans to speak openly about obesity and seek help earlier, warning that stigma is delaying treatment and putting lives at risk.

Specialist physician and endocrinologist Dr Reyna Daya
said obesity is widely misunderstood.

“Many people believe it is simply a matter of willpower, but it is a chronic disease influenced by biological, environmental and social factors,” she said.

She added that patients often seek help only after developing serious conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Registered dietitian, Azi Booi said the lack of awareness and cost remain major barriers to treatment.

“Dietitians are available in public hospitals and clinics, but many people do not know these services exist.”
