The LeadHerShip programme, launched in 2022, aims to empower marginalised young women, particularly those facing unemployment, by providing them with valuable work experience and networking opportunities.

Pizza Hut Turkey, Africa and Germany head of brand marketing Rirhandzu Manganye emphasised the initiative’s objectives.

“Our holding company, Yum, is focused on how we are giving everyone an equal opportunity. So, that translates to Pizza Hut’s world of how we give everyone an equal slice.

“We then look at who are the marginalised groups and what can we do to uplift them so they can secure their rightful place at the table,” Manganye said.

Manganye said in South Africa the unemployment rate was stark.

“70% of unemployed youth are females. Women, especially in households are crucial in supporting their families. And we find that most unemployed women are not people who are looking for handouts.

“It’s resilient and strong women that are looking for opportunities to be able to live up to their potential. By empowering them, we are not just helping individuals; we are uplifting entire communities.”

Manganye added when young women have completed the 12 months programme, they provide them with mentorship on how to write CVs, job application strategies as well as networking opportunities.

The programme’s graduate Tshegofatso Rakwena shared her experience. “LeadHerShip has given me not just job skills but confidence in my abilities. I now have a clearer path to my career goals, and I feel empowered to support others.”

Current participant Shantell Serage said, “This programme has opened doors for me that I didn’t know existed. The mentorship and training are invaluable. It’s not just about getting a job; it’s about building a future.”

As LeadHerShip enters its third cohort, the focus is on sustainability. Emphasising the programme’s growth, Manganye said, “We are actively seeking sponsorship and partnerships with organisations committed to empowering young women.

“LeadHerShip must become self-sustainable, ensuring we can continue to support these incredible individuals on their career journeys.”

Through collaborative efforts with partners such as Yes for Youth, Youth Content Collective, Youth at Work, and Click Foundation, LeadHerShip continues to place young women in various industries, including education, mental health, and the arts.
